There's something almost magical about a beautifully crafted, juicy, and flavourful glazed ham. It's a staple at holiday parties, family gatherings, and festive celebrations, but it's also a delicious meal option for everyday dining. In this article, I'll be sharing my all-time favourite glazed ham recipe that is not only simple to make but also incredibly tasty. Choosing the Perfect Ham
Selecting the right ham for your recipe is the first step towards achieving a perfect glazed ham. There are many types of ham available in the market, but for this particular recipe, I usually prefer a bone-in, spiral-cut ham. The bone adds depth to the flavour, and the pre-cut slices make it easier to serve. Look for a ham that is pinkish-red in colour, which is a good indicator of its quality. Size-wise, you'll want to consider the number of guests you'll be serving. A good rule of thumb is to allow about 1/2 to 3/4 pound of bone-in ham per person.
The Sweet & Savoury Glaze
The glaze is what gives the ham its signature sweet, tangy, and slightly savoury flavour. For my favourite glazed ham recipe, I use a combination of brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard, and a touch of apple cider vinegar. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C), then bake the ham for about 15 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C). During the last 30 minutes of cooking, remove the foil and brush the ham generously with your prepared glaze. Return the ham to the oven and continue to cook, uncovered, until the glaze is caramelized and bubbling.
After your ham is cooked and beautifully glazed, let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it more moist and flavourful. Remember to store leftover ham in the refrigerator, where it should keep for up to 4 days. You can also freeze it for longer storage. Just be sure to wrap it tightly to prevent freezer burn.
